Egg donation

Egg donation is the procedure where one woman donates oocytes (i.e. unfertilized oocytes) to another woman in need for oocytes. Egg donation takes place either in connection with infertility treatment or as a procedure where the woman will donate all oocytes for altruistic reasons. The egg donor is by law anonymous in Denmark. In Denmark the oocytes must always be inseminated by the husband with couples accepting the donated oocytes. Donated eggs can not be fertilised with sperm cells from a donor, and donor semen can not be used since the child always must know one of its genetic parents. This is not the case in other countries where embryo donation might be possible.
In Denmark very few women themselves, in fertility treatment, choose to donate surplus oocytes to other women. Likewise - only a small number of women will commit themselves to oocyte donation without being in treatment.
Copenhagen Fertility Center offers oocyte donation, but there are very few Danish donors. However, a much larger program for oocyte donation is done in collaboration with clinics in Greece, Ukraine and Spain.
These clinics have experience with egg donation and also offer eggs to women with a Scandinavian type.
Copenhagen Fertilty Center takes no responsibility for the egg transfer and the result, since the treatment takes place abroad. Our function is, on the request of the clinic abroad, to examine you and inform about your general health.

Egg donation – why?

Women in need for egg donation might be women carrying a known condition not suitable for creating a baby, bad egg quality seen after several IVF treatments or women in premature menopause.
The decision to accept egg donation is always very difficult and has to be discussed with your doctor.

How do we do this ?

When the decision has been made and the clinic for oocyte donation has been selected, a visit in our clinic is important. Here all necessary blood tests can be taken, including HIV test, Hepatitis B and C and blood types for both of you (in the case of embryo donation for single women, only the women herself is controlled).
The clinic abroad is informed and the treatment can start. Usually the treatment starts with a down regulation of the recipient day 21 in her cycle, and after 14 days it is followed up by a simple tablet treatment with different doses of estradiol. This to synchronize the donor and the recipient donor clinic for 3–5 days with your husband (he is giving a semen sample) for fertilization and embryo transfer.
Upon arrival in Denmark, a pregnancy test is taken 14 days after embryo transfer in Copenhagen Fertility Center.
